- What are some of the types of infections that may affect my computer?
- Viruses
Viruses, sometimes known as malware (malicious software), are today's version of electronic infection that plague individual computers and computer networks. These infections, similar to traits of biological viruses are typically passed from computer to computer like their biological counterparts are passed from person to person.
A biological virus is not a living thing, but a piece of DNA residing inside a protective wrap. Alone, this virus can do nothing by itself. It must attach itself to a cell that has the mechanism to duplicate itself. Then it can wreck havoc in the human body.
Similarly, the computer virus must attach itself to another program or code to be able to reproduce and wreck havoc in the computer hard drive.
- Worms
A worm on the other hand is a type of infection that does not rely on another program to be executed. Typically utilizing email as its main transportation source, worms have the ability to move around freely in a computer network, even generating bogus emails to entire address books, replicating and wrecking havoc.
- Trojan Horses
Taken from a story in Homer's Illiad where the Greeks give a gift of a giant wooden horse to the Trojans, a Trojan horse is an infection that disguises itself as a computer program that claims to be something desirable, such as a free movie or game and ends up being a destructive program that can damage your computer. These infections are not able to replicate themselves or spread throughout a network on their own.
- How does antivirus software work?
Antivirus software programs use one or more methods to screen (scan) emails and other files that move in and out of your computer. When an antivirus program scans your computer for viruses, it compares the contents of each file on your computer to its database of virus definitions. If it finds a match, generally a virus is present. Once a virus is detected, the virus is examined so that a signature file can be created for inoculating the virus. This inoculation is added to the antivirus software database (.dat file) and is used when scanning computers to identify and destroy viruses.
Another more aggressive way to detect viruses is called heuristics scanning. Heuristic scanning looks for code that is generally indicative of a virus, even if there is no bit pattern for that virus. Certain things "flag" the antivirus software, such as jump statements at the beginning of the program code, or other such commands that could allow the code to attach itself to another program. This is especially useful when detecting a virus that might have been modified from its original version. Enough of the virus code is similar to the original code, and the antivirus software is able to detect the program as a virus.
- Why do I need antivirus software?
The most common and prolific threat in the computer world today is the virus. Without antivirus software protection the probability is extremely high that a virus will eventually infect a computer user and cause the user to lose significant data. With an antivirus program, you can maintain your data that may be irreplaceable and/or years old and save yourself quite a bit of time and headache. As for Monitors (resident online scanners) you should be warned that two or more active resident Monitors working simultaneously can cause conflicts. In most cases this leads to the false positives or unstable working. So it is not recommended to use two Monitors at the same time.

In CyberScrub AntiVirus is indicated the number of records ("micro cure modules") in antivirus database not a number of viruses it detects. For example, some unknown hacker created about 15,000 (fifteen thousands!) viruses with VCK virus generator. CyberScrub AntiVirus protects against all these viruses using only 5 "micro cure modules", i.e. it counts 15,000 viruses as 5 records in antivirus database. Thus, the number of records indicated in CyberScrub AntiVirus can not be compared with the number of viruses in other antivirus vendors.
