Numera
Numera (pronounced new-mare-ruh) was designed to be an affordable, expressive and flexible way to work with numbers. Numera emulates the numerical capabilities of the C programming language to some extent, but you do not have to be a programmer to use Numera. When people gain a small amount of proficiency with Numera, we notice they use Numera whenever they can, and tend to use their hand-held calculators and spreadsheets less. Having said that, we should say that Numera is not intended to replace hand-held calculators and spreadsheets, but rather, to enhance your set of calculation tools. A dynamic range of people, 3rd graders, grandmothers, scientists and engineers use Numera, and most are not programmers, at least they think they're not. Actually, we naturally program every day, in our thought processes and decision-making. When people, especially young children, learn to use this kind of logic, it benefits them the rest of their lives. Numera's word-processor interface lets you naturally write mathematical, fraction and graphing expressions, and those expressions can be saved as files and re-opened at a later date and modified, just like word-processor files. Numera provides a multiple document interfaces for mathematical expressions, fraction expressions and graphing expressions. You can have many files of those types open at one time, in any combination. Numera also has various utilities, including a unit converter with 75 categories and approximately 1500 unit types. |

Numera FAQ:
How difficult is it to use Numera?
That's a fair question, and the answer is that it depends on what you're trying to do.
We'll discuss that in a second. Studies show that most people use about 30% of a large application's features.
Do you know anyone who uses EVERY feature of the high-end word processors and spreadsheets out there?
Most people use an application to perform a limited number of tasks.
So, if you want to use Numera essentially as a calculator, then it's easy - just go through the tutorials in the tutorials\expressions\beginning_examples and fast_start
folders that will be created when you install Numera. You'll quickly "get the idea." You can also take the Numera Tour on this site and see for yourself the advantages of using Numera as a calculator. You will also see that using variable names is an easy, natural and expressive way of working with numbers.
If you want to use Numera to write an amortization mortgage calculator, it's more difficult because you will need to learn how to use arrays, structs, looping etc. Numera may inspire you to become a programmer, or maybe you won't have any interest in that.
Either way, it's an extremely useful application and well worth the price.
What does your company name mean?
A while loop is a looping mechanism in the C/C++ languages.
The company owner wrote Numera in the C++ language and was using numerous while loops.
One day, someone asked him what he did for a living, and having his code on his mind and
being also the consummate comedian said: "I write while loops."
It then hit him that would be a cool, geeky name.
The guy who asked the question was completely puzzled, but the owner explained it to him.
Can Numera teach me to program?
If you are proficient with the Numera Expresssions Document, you will probably have a good understanding of the fundamental programming concepts and logic, i.e., storing data (arrays and structures), looping through data (for, while and do-while loops), variables etc. Numera has been used to teach beginning level programming.
It is important to understand fundamental concepts and logic because they are implemented in most of the 2500+ languages that have been designed. Once you understand the fundamentals it becomes easier to learn a new language. The challenge is to then code the fundamentals and logic in the new language's syntax.
Numera is similar to the numerical aspects of the C programming language, but greatly simplified. Learning C and C++ is not a trivial matter, and just knowing Numera will not make anyone a "real" programmer.
However, even an elementary understanding of the fundamentals can be very useful. For example, Microsoft Office, i.e., Excel, Access etc., provides the ability to write code "behind the application" with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). If you understand the fundamentals of programming, then learning and writing VBA code will be easier than if you started from "scratch." Then, if you were proficient with VBA code for Excel, for example, you would really look smart at your work place.
You may ask, "Why have so many languages been developed?" The answer is they're often developed for specific kinds of programmers and/or disciplines. The original BASIC language (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was developed at Dartmouth College in 1964 as an easy introduction to programming. Microsoft's Visual Basic has grown into a feature rich mainstream language that far surpasses the original BASIC. FORTRAN was written for mathematical applications. Some languages are written for embedded applications, for example, a car's computer.
Is Numera like a spreadsheet?
No. Numera lets you enter expressions in a freeform way that is, for many types of problems, easier and more flexible than using a spreadsheet. Having said that, we should say that Numera is not intended to replace your spreadsheet, but rather, to enhance your set
A column in a spreadsheet equates to an array in Numera.
Rows and Columns in a spreadsheet equate to a matrix in Numera.
A record in a database equates to an instance of a structure in Numera.
What is the best way to start learning Numera?
We suggest you read the "How to Use Numera" section in the help file before using Numera.
First, download and install Numera.
Once installed, you can start that help file in the following 2 ways:
1. Press the Start button, select "All Programs" then select the Numera menu group, then select "Numera Help File."
2. Start Numera by double clicking on the Numera icon that was placed on your desktop. Select OK, then select the Help menu, then select "Numera Help."
The "How to Use Numera" section provides an introduction to Numera's document types: expressions, fractions and the function grapher.
We then suggest you read the "Numera's Utilities" section in that help file to get acquainted with them.
Then, look at the tutorials in the tutorial folders that were discussed in the "How to Use Numera" section.
If you're not interested in the programming concepts, then just use Numera as a calculator. Be sure you understand the information discussed in the Essential Knowledge section in the help file.
Why do some variables in your examples begin with the ` character?
If you begin a variable's name with the ` character, the variable will not be shown in the results text box.
One technique we use when working with Numera is to use unique variable names. Then if at some point we decide we don't want to see a variable in the results box, we do a find and replace (Ctrl+H) and replace the variable with a variable that begins with the ` character. For example, if we're using a variable called indexer, we would replace it with `indexer.
