Internet Broadcasting Studio - Home Edition
The Internet Broadcasting Studio is a software package composed
of two programs: BS-Server and BS-Player. BS-Server is capable of
streaming images and music from a simple PC running Windows XP to
a potentially large audience, using a standard web server as a bandwidth
amplifier. All you need to start your own Internet broadcast is
this program, and the ability to upload files to some web server.
BS-Server runs in your computer, builds a data stream with your
pictures and/or audio files, and sends this stream into a directory
of your web site. The disk space used in the web server is always
less than 5 MB, even if your broadcast lasts for hours.
To view/listen to your broadcast, your audience will use BS-Player,
a light-weight multimedia player specially designed to receive the
BS-Server data streams. BS-Player is freely redistributable, meaning
that your audience can download it and use it for free. To protect
your copyright and prevent others from copying your photos and music,
BS-Player has no "Save" feature.
With Internet Broadcasting Studio, you can easily set up
a pay-per-view broadcast by encrypting your data stream with a secret
key. Send the key to viewers/listeners who subscribed to your broadcast
with PayPal or any other online payment processing services. You
can further control access to your broadcast by setting user-based
passwords with your web server htaccess files. |

FAQ:
- What does "bandwidth" and "Kbps" mean ?
The word bandwidth is used to mean the amount of data that can be transferred through a digital connection in a given time period. Bandwidth is usually measured in bits or bytes per second. This is why bandwidth is also called "speed" or "bit rate". Kbps means 1024 bits per second.
- Does this software require a broadband (DSL/cable) Internet access ?
No. Our software works even with older modems. However, the maximum bandwidth of your radio programs is limited to the speed of your Internet connection. If you have a 56 Kbps modem, you probably would broadcast a 40 Kbps stream. Faster Internet connections allow for higher bandwidths, which means better audio and image quality.
- Why are there so many bandwidth settings ? Which one should I use ?
Higher bandwidths give better audio and image quality. For example, 24 Kbps audio sounds like AM radio but 64 Kbps sounds like FM. So why use 24 Kbps if 64 Kbps is so much better ? Well, it depends on several factors:
1. your own internet connection speed: if you have a 56 Kbps modem, no way to broadcast a 64 Kbps stream, obviously.
2. your intended audience's connection speed: if you have a 1 Mbps DSL connection at home you can broadcast 192 Kbps programs, providing near-CD quality audio. But people with good old 56 Kbps modems won't be able to receive them.
3. your relaying web server bandwidth: your ISP's web server has probably a several Mbps bandwidth. This bandwidth is not unlimited however, and your ISP may complain if you drain too much of it for your web radio. If you plan to have many (hundreds) listeners, it would be safe to use low-bandwidth settings (32 Kbps or less). If you broadcast for a few friends only, then select higher values.
- How many people will receive my broadcast ?
The maximum number of concurrent listeners depends on the bandwidth of the web server which relays your program. It does not depend on the bandwidth of your own connection to the internet. If you are using your IPS's web server (most ISPs offer free web space to their customers) there are probably several Mbps of bandwidth available. For example, 10 Mbps bandwidth would allow up to 250 listeners for a 32 Kbps stream.
- How to autostart the program when my computer boots up ?
Create a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Broadcasting-Software\BS-Server\BSServer.exe in Windows Startup folder, which is located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your id]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Edit the shortcut's properties: append /start to the Target path:
"C:\Program Files\Broadcasting-Software\BS-Server\BSServer.exe" /start
- How to setup a private broadcast ?
If you enter a password in the Key field of the Security tab of BS-Server, your stream will be encrypted. People will have to input this password in their player to receive your program.
- How to link to my broadcast from a web page ?
To create a link which will launch BS-Tuner and autostart your broadcast, create a tag which links to the URL of your broadcast, using the "bstp" scheme instead of "http".
- How to set the target directory of BS-Server ?
BS-Server builds a data stream with your pictures and/or audio files, splits this stream in small blocks and uploads them into a directory of your web site using the FTP protocol. You define this target directory in the FTP field of the General tab of BS-Server.
Usually, your web server has a main directory named "httpdocs" or "public_html". It is strongly advised to create a new subdirectory inside this main directory, and use it as the target directory of BS-Server.
Step by step guide:
1. With your favourite FTP client (WS_FTP, CuteTFTP, etc) connect to your FTP server. Usually your FTP session starts in your FTP root directory, which is one level above your web server's main directory.
2. Open your web server's main directory ("httpdocs" or "public_html")
3. Create a directory inside your web server's main directory, and name it "broadcast", for instance. This will be the target directory of BS-Server.
4. Open the "broadcast" directory you have just created, and upload a file into it just to check that your FTP settings are OK (take any small file from your hard disk, a picture for instance). If you can upload a file there, then BS-Server will be able to do it too.
5. Enter the path of the "broadcast" directory in the FTP field of the General tab of BS-Server.
