Input Selection
- River Past Audio Capture enables you to select the input port with easy and obvious interface, whether you are capturing from microphone, line-In, or speakers.

It is the only audio recording software which enables you to record from a DV camcorder or VCR connected to 1394 port. This makes it extremely easy for you to move your newer collection of DV tapes to your computer.

WAV is a universal format which can be read on almost any audio software on all computer platforms, including MacOS and Linux.
MP3 is commonly used on personal portable audio players. It supports high quality compression. Many internet download sites use MP3 formats.
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is Microsoft's audio compression format. It is used on some portable audio players, and used for internet audio streaming.
OGG Vorbis is an open source audio compression format which provides similar quality as MP3, without the expensive loyalties.
Why do we provide audio-only AVI as an output format? If you are using video editing software on a different platform, like MacOS or Linux, your software may not take MP3 or WMA as input. Although WAV should be accepted without any problem, its uncompressed large size makes transferring files between platforms time-consuming. However, most likely your video editing software would take an audio-only AVI with compression as input.
Codec Control:
With WAV, MP3, and audio-only AVI output, you have the full control over sample rate, channel, resolution (8-bit or 16-bit), and bitrate.
With WMA output, you have the choice of many pre-defined profiles, targeted at different usages.
Pause Control:
You can pause the recording in River Past Audio Capture, and restart later. This enables you to have multiple segments of recording in a single audio file.
Universal Converter:
By recording from the speakers, River Past Audio Capture can be used as a universal audio converter, regardless where the audio is from.
For example, you can start playback of a RealMedia or RealAudio file in the background with Real Player, and record from speakers. This turns River Past Audio Capture into a RA to MP3 (or RA to WMA) converter.
You can use the same method to convert MIDI to MP3/WMA
Sometimes it is the only way to convert some audio formats. For example, Napster and MusicMatch use encrypted WMA audio, which only their software can decoder. To convert the music you already purchased to MP3, you can either burn a CD from their software, and then rip and convert it, or you can use River Past Audio Capture to record through the speakers.

Why is the sample rate limited to 24 kHz when I select MP3 as the audio codec?
We use the MPEG Layer-3 codec in DirectShow. The default codec shipped by Microsoft is limited on some systems. You can install another MP3 codec to get the higher quality. You can use the lame_enc.dll in the LAME MP3 encoder.
How do I disable LAME MP3 ACM?
Generally, LAME is a good MP3 encoder. LAME comes in three forms.
- 1. An exe or dll. In this case, the encoder is called directly. This is the most reliable form.
- 2. A DirectShow filter.
- 3. A ACM (Audio Compression Manager) component.
Our software uses either the DLL form (lame_enc.dll) or ACM modules for audio compression. While Lame_enc.dll is extremely reliable and fast, the LAME ACM is very unstable. On some systems, it works fine. On some, it fails to encode. On others, it crashes.
If LAME ACM is causing problems on your PC, you can disable it by the following steps.
- 1. Open Systems Control Panel.
- 2. Go to the "Hardware" tab, and click on "Device Manager".
- 3. Make sure the View is set to "Devices by type". Double-click on "Audio Codecs" under "Sound, video and game controllers".
- 4. Go to the "Properties" tab. Find lame.acm and double click to bring up its property page.
- 5. Check "Do not use this codec".
I have recording some audio and the recorded file is silent. What could have caused that?
Please make sure the "Port" setting combo box matches your physical connection to the sound card. If the audio cable is plugged into the Microphone port, the "Port" combo box should be set to "Microphone". If the audio cable is plugged into the Line-in port, the "Port" combo box should be set to "Line-In".
Some sound card is not doing a good job setting the recording volume level automatically. Select "Manual" option for "Volume" and move the slider to the right for louder recording.
